Frequenty Asked Questions
Q: Can I just join the fitness-side of your facility?
A: All new members are required to pay the Initiation Fee which includes extensive front-end testing
and analysis of your fitness goals. Unless you are specifically interested in healthy weight loss to start,
you would be paying for services that you did not use. Other fitness-only clubs may be of interest to you, if
you are not interested in both the food & fitness complete solution we offer.
Q: Can I just buy Utoipa's food, and not join the fitness studio?
A: Yes, our food is available to the general public. However, non-members are not able to receive our
customized, calorie-appropriate plan specifically tailored to your weight-loss goals.
Q: Why don’t commercial diets seem to work? I lose the weight and then put it all back on, plus extra.
A: Commercial diets only attack the symptoms and not the underlying problem of excess fat gain. By simply
restricting calories to lose weight you will eventually do more harm than good and that becomes your experience
of gaining it all back, plus extra.
On commercial diets without fitness:
- You will lose more weight than fat. Weight loss that is not fat loss is dehydration
(water loss), loss from vital areas of our bodies and mostly importantly, the critical loss of muscle.
When you lose this critical muscle, you will:
- Lower your metabolism setting the stage for future damage
- Can cram 10 years of natural muscle decline into less than two months
- When you re-gain weight, you will now add back more fat than when you started
- Going on any indiscriminate, calorie restricted diet is like restricting your
breathing. You can do it for a while but you cannot sustain it for long. Soon you wear out and have
to breathe again – and when you do, you binge breathe to catch up.
Therefore, without both a proper diet and exercise plan that is scientifically calibrated as a single unit, our
bodies enter into a destructive cycle of muscle loss, fat gain, and consequently unnecessary, unattractive, premature
aging. You can read more about why diets fail by clicking here.
Q: Is there a monthly fee to be a member?
A: Yes, there are monthly dues, depending on the package. Please call or visit for details.
Q: How will I know if I'm doing everything right once I join your program?
A: One of the main advantages of signing up with Utopia is the personalized attention you get. You will start out
with an extensive front-end individual testing and analysis and understanding your weight-loss goals. During the program,
we will be there with you the whole time, to help you and answer your questions.
Q: I’ve heard that aerobic exercise burns fat. Is that true and why does that not seem to be working for me?
A: Yes, aerobic activity does burn fat but that statement is very misleading when it stands alone without
additional information. Here is the research behind that statement:
Scientists will tell you that when your body is at complete rest, you are burning the highest percentage of fat
versus sugar. As you become more active that ratio starts to switch. If you start to walk then the ratio starts
to switch from less fat burn and more sugar burn. You then begin to run faster and faster. Once you are sprinting
at your maximum speed and effort then your fuel becomes all sugar and no fat because you need maximum fuel as
quickly as possible. In fact, you can now be burning sugar so fast that your oxygen can’t even keep up with the
demand. That’s when you start to feel that burning sensation in your muscles.
Therefore, fitness experts advise you to do activity which allows your oxygen to keep up and that is called aerobic
activity. The opposite is called anaerobic activity – where your oxygen cannot keep up and you burn much more sugar
Although you are burning the maximum amount of fat during aerobic activity the total amount of calories is truly
minimal. It’s not that you shouldn’t do aerobic activity for cardiovascular benefits but as a primary way to burn
fat is isn’t sustainable.
You can read more about why aerobics only doesn't work by clicking here.
Q: If aerobic activity isn’t primarily sustainable for burning excess body fat, then what does Utopia recommend?
A: At Utopia, we are not against aerobic activity and importantly include it in your circuit training. We want
you to aerobically improve your transport system but not to depend upon aerobic activity as a primary way to burn fat.
Also included in your circuit training is strength training for the following critical 3 reasons –
think of it as the big 3.
- By doing strength training while you are on a moderately restricted calorie diet we will
ensure that all of your weight loss is coming from your fat stores and not from muscle loss. Because physical
non-performance is a higher priority than moderate starvation, your body will actually burn fat to build
By doing strength training you are “activating muscle.” This is important in that you are both training your
muscles how to take up more energy and that added energy spurs you into a more active lifestyle. So more of
your calories are now going into energy instead of fat and you are burning more calories through increased
By activating your muscles you will also burn more calories at rest. And the best part is when at rest you
are burning up to 75% of all the calories you burn with 60% of those calories coming from fat – an even
higher percentage than during aerobic activity!
Q: When I previously went on a commercial diet I lost more weight than on the Utopia program, but on the Utopia program
I lost more inches and looked much healthier. How does that work?
A: Because many Americans have become obsessed with weight loss, commercial programs will often emphasize
“gross poundage” lost. Included in this weight loss is not just fat, but also dehydration (water loss) and
lean loss of muscle, organs and other lean tissues.
On your Utopia weight loss program you will actually lose more fat than weight and even more fat than on a
commercial diet. Here is an example we've seen many times when comparing a member's Utopia results vs other available

Q: As a female I’m fearful of strength training. I don’t want to bulk up or look overly muscular. What
can you do to ease these fears?
A: Here are some important things to keep in mind:
- Women don’t have testosterone like men, but mostly estrogen instead and therefore cannot build
muscle like men.
- Added muscle (lean tissue) takes up much less volume than excess body fat. Women actually
become much trimmer, leaner, shapelier and more feminine. Muscle is shapely, fat is lumpy.
- One main reason younger women can eat more than older women is that they have more muscle,
store more energy and burn more calories.
- Women are also not able to achieve as high a muscle definition as men because women store
more subcutaneous fat which further define their bodies as more feminine.
- Even if you take an extreme, worst-case scenario of gaining more muscle than you want,
you simply back off your strength training and it goes away. If you have ever seen anyone who just took off
their cast for a broken bone you can see how quickly muscle atrophy can set in.
Q: I'm never hungry for breakfast and when I do eat breakfast it just makes me hungrier for lunch.
Is it okay to just skip breakfast?
A: No, breakfast is a very important meal. That’s why it’s called "break fast." You are breaking your
overnight fast. When you fast, it’s not uncommon to lose your appetite, but when you do finally eat, you can
not only lose control of your appetite but also your body will store more fat than if you eat on a regular,
Q: Why doesn’t Utopia place a greater emphasis on total weight loss?
A: Diet-only, weight loss programs that measure their entire success on gross poundage lost almost always
involve losing more than just body fat. Their participants can expect to lose vital body fluids through dehydration
and also the loss of lean tissue which will only serve to lower body metabolism.
Your Utopia program is all about body recomposition. Not only losing the most fat and the most inches but also
maintaining and building additional lean tissue, which enhances body appearance, increases your strength and energy
and additionally increases body metabolism.
Q: How much weight can I expect to lose on the Utopia 6-Week Total Body Makeover program?
A: On average 2 to 3 pounds per week based upon the variables of total body weight, how much fat you need to lose,
previous diet history and hydration level.
Additionally, someone who has become over-fat by simply over-eating will lose faster than someone who has been a
chronic starvation or yo-yo dieter.
Q: Can’t I get even faster results if I cut some of the fat out of the Utopia meal plan?
A: No, the reverse will happen. You will not be getting enough calories and therefore not lose fat as efficiently. You will be missing certain essential nutrients from fat. And, a certain level of fat provides significant satiety and satisfaction in your meal plan that helps keep you on track.
Q: Why is it so important that I eat so often during the day?
A: Larger, less frequent meals cause too many calories to enter the bloodstream at once and your body must store
the excess as fat. When you overeat at one time repeatedly, your body becomes more efficient at adapting to the surge
of calories by making more fat. And, when you then have to also go too long between meals your body detects starvation
and begins to eat muscle to lower your metabolism and preserve your fat stores.
Q: I work out first thing in the morning, or right before a meal and I don’t seem to have the energy necessary to
really get a good workout. What can I do about this?
A: If you are working out before any scheduled meal then eat something light within an hour before your workout.
You can simply borrow something from one of your meals as a light snack.
